UNESCO to Launch Online Tool to Measure Countries’ Education

UNESCO is set to launch a new online tool to measure educational progress around the world on the occasion of the International Day of Education on January 24.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced that it will set in motion a new online platform to measure countries progress in achieving global SDG4 education. The latter is one of the 17 goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that seeks to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”

The tool was developed UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring Report with the assistance of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany.

The UNESCO states in its official website that this new online platform, called Education Progress, will be accessible to the public and educational planners alike.

The UNESCO also revealed that the online tool will be available in the six UN official languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Spanish and Russian) in addition to the German language.

The new platform will be presented during the UN celebration of the International Day of Education expected to take place in New York. The event will be opened by UNESCO’s Director-General Audrey Azouley and daughter of of King Mohammed VI’s senior advisor André Azouley. Audrey has been at the head of UNESCO since 2017 and previously served as France’s Minister of Culture from 2016 to 2017.

The event will also unite “education policy makers, including Jean-Michel Blanquer, Education Minister of France, Ibrahima Guimba-Saïdou, Minister and Special Advisor to the President of Niger, academics and leading education experts and stakeholders from around the world.”

In addition to launching the online tool, the two-day event will host a conference titled Learning for People, the Planet, Prosperity and Peace as well as “the first meeting of eminent global thinkers appointed to steer UNESCO’s Futures of Education initiative.”
