Switzerland to Help Develop Morocco’s Road and Rail Infrastructure

Morocco and Switzerland have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on September 9th aimed at enhancing Morocco’s road and rail infrastructure. 

A Moroccan delegation headed by, Abdelkader Amara, Morocco’s Minister of Equipment, Transport, Logistics and Water have made a visit to Switzerland to establish a collaboration between the two countries in the area of transportation. The Moroccan delegation comprises senior ministry officials, and public institutions and professionals operating in the transport industry.

The Moroccan minister who emphasized the importance railway development and sustainability stated that the signed MoU “covers some 20 areas of cooperation, from planning to the operational phase.” His Swiss counterpart, Simonetta Sommaruga, said that infrastructure projects take a long time to realize, but stressed “the importance of having more goods on the rails because it is important from an ecological point of view and for efficiency.”

The Swiss Department for the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication released a statement stating that the Swiss expertise was a big part in the establishment of Morocco’s high-speed rail line between Rabat and Tangier. It added that there are plans to extend this network and connect other Moroccan cities like Marrakech, Tangier, and Oujda.
